Connemara Mussel Festival Poetry Competition

Building upon the diversity of arts and culture already catered for at the festival, the Connemara Mussel Festival is delighted to announce the launch of  a  poetry competition for 2016.  The competition was the brainchild of John Coyle of Renvyle House who suggested at the festival launch in March of this year that there weren’t many poems about the humble mussel and to rectify that situation he would be delighted to sponsor a competition to be run by the Connemara Mussel Festival.

The competition was launched at Renvyle House Hotel on 18th November by poet and Professor of Literature at Vassar University, New York, Eamonn Grennan, who will also judge the entries.

Theme: Mussels. While the poem does not have to be about mussels, it must contain some reference to the mussel.

Maximum length:  51 lines.

The two best poems in the opinion of the judge will be awarded €250 and €100 respectively.

Deadline: 13th  March 2016.

Not impressed with this ageist offering at all

Not everyone has the luxury of putting their life on hold to write. Poetry doesn't pay. Not many poets are independently wealthy and even poets have to eat. Many exceptionally good poets don't start writing until they are a good way into adulthood, even retired. And yet...here's a bursary restricted to under 35's. Poetry Ireland should know better.

Poetry Ireland, in association with Cúirt, is delighted to offer an emerging younger poet the opportunity to visit the festival and to immerse themselves in the poetry programme. The successful applicant will attend all poetry readings and launches at the festival and they will also be allocated a place on the workshop programme. They will receive complimentary tickets to all events, bed and breakfast accommodation for 5 nights, along with their travel costs to Galway and a per diem. In return they will be required to write a blog for Poetry Ireland and Cúirt while at the festival.
Applications are invited from those aged 35 or under, who are beginning to have poems published in reputable journals or magazines, and who are based in Ireland or Northern Ireland. This award is dedicated to writers who have yet to have a full collection published. If you are interested in being considered for this bursary, please send us a short expression of interest, outlining why your work would benefit from this support. Applications which exceed one page will be deemed ineligible.
Deadline 27th March.

The RSPB and The Rialto Nature Poetry Competition

As well as offering poets the chance to win considerable cash prizes and publication of their poems, this competition will raise money for conservation and poetry.

Prizes
1st PRIZE £1000
2nd PRIZE £500
3rd PRIZE A Place on a Creative Writing Course at Ty Newydd in 2015 (worth £550)
ADDITIONAL PRIZE, a personal tour with Mark Cocker of his most cherished wild life places in East Anglia. Mark is one of Britain’s most celebrated writers on nature.

The judge is celebrated poet, writer and broadcaster, Simon Armitage.

The entry fee is £6 for the first poem and £3.50 for each subsequent entry.

Full details and the facility to enter online can be found on The Rialto website:

Please do note the term ‘Nature Poetry’ will be given a wide interpretation by the judge. Here are some thoughts by Michael Mackmin in The Rialto editorial:

So what is Nature Poetry? As the flier says, the judge will give this a wide interpretation. I’d imagine it won’t have to be just poems about creatures and beings that share the planet, or about ‘environmental concerns’. We are all air and water, everything we eat comes from the earth or the sea, most people know the roughness of a leaf or the heft of a stone can change a mood or express a feeling. I asked a 16 year old, What is nature? and she said, insects and grass: I asked a 32 year old the same question and she said, the sun and the moon and the stars and flowers and fruit and babies. You might just have to write your poems and take a risk.

Closing date of the competition is midnight on March 1st 2015
