The lovely people at Skylight are looking for submissions.
Deadline 1 February 2018 (midnight).

Please send up to three poems, along with a short biographical note (max 60 words), to skylightpoets47@gmail.com. Work should be unpublished.
Poems to be no longer than 40 lines.

Please send your poems both as an attachment (.doc, .docx, .txt or .rtf) and in the body of the email.

The editors are also looking for original artwork. We will be featuring one artist in each issue, publishing four or five pieces. If you would like to be this artist, please email your work during the submission window.

Contributors will receive one copy of the magazine.

Gregory O’Donoghue International Poetry Prize

The Munster Literature Centre holds an annual competition for an international poetry prize for a single poem, named in honour of a late Irish poet long associated with the Centre.
The Gregory O’Donoghue International Poetry Prize will have a first prize of €1,000 (approx $1190.63 USD/ £882.80 GBP @ xe.com on 21st September 2017), a week's residency at the Tyrone Guthrie Centre and publication in Southword Literary Journal. The MLC will subvent travel costs for the winner up to €600 and provide hotel accommodation and meals for four days during the Cork International Poetry FestivalAt the festival, the winner will be treated to a poetry masterclass with Brian Turner.
There will be a second prize of €500, third prize of €250, and ten runners-up will each have their poems published in Southword and receive Southword’s standard fee of €30.
The final date for receipt of entries is November 30, 2017. The judge is Munster Literature Centre Director Patrick Cotter.
Due to the large volume of entries, the judge will not be able to notify the authors of non-winning poems or give individual feedback. A shortlist will be posted on our website in late January and the winners will be announced during the Cork International Poetry Festival. We recommend signing up for the Munster Literature Centre newsletter if you would like to be kept up-to-date with all competition developments directly.

Doolin Writers’ Competition 2018

Doolin Writers’ Competition 2018 with a prize fund of €2500. Entries are now being accepted for Short Stories, Poetry and Flash Fiction 
Deadline: December 1st 2017. 
This year Doireann Ní Ghríofa will judge the poetry competition, Sarah Davis-Goff and Lisa Coen from Tramp Press will judge the Short Story and the Flash Fiction Category.
Meanwhile Hotel Doolin has confirmed the weekend of the 2nd-4th February for the 6th Annual Doolin Writers’ Weekend, County Clare will again play host to some of the country’s leading writers.

The Moth Poetry Prize 2017

The Moth Poetry Prize (formerly the Ballymaloe International Poetry Prize) is now in its seventh year, it continues to offer one of the most lucrative awards in the world for a single unpublished poem.

ABOUT THE PRIZE Since its inception in 2011, the prize has been judged by such celebrated poets as Deborah Landau, Matthew Sweeney and Billy Collins. Winners of the prize have included Lee Sharkey, Abigail Parry and Ann Gray, whose poem was shortlisted for the Forward Prize for Best Single Poem in 2015.

The Moth Poetry Prize is open to anyone (over 16), as long as the poem is previously unpublished, and each year it attracts thousands of entries from new and established poets from over 50 countries worldwide.

This year’s judge is Daljit Nagra. Nagra was the first poet to win the Forward Prize for both his first collection of poetry and its title poem. He recently published his third collection of poetry with Faber, British Museum, and teaches poetry at Brunel University London and is Poet in Residence for BBC Radio 4.

Foreign Voices Poetry Competition

We’re inviting you to send us poems that deal with the subject of migration.
People move to another country for many reasons ranging from loving someone to fleeing from war and persecution. Are you an immigrant, emigrant, refugee, or are any of your friends, relatives or neighbours? How do you react to what you read on social media about migration? Are you involved in supporting immigrants or deal with them in an official capacity?
Poems can be triggered by any aspect of migration and the opportunities to reflect on this theme are endless.
We don’t have to agree with your opinions, but we do want to be touched in some way by your poem, inspired by its imagery and, of course, look for a beautiful use of language.

Cuirt New Writing


The Cúirt New Writing Prize, in memory of Lena McGuire, is now open for submissions. The categories are poetry and short stories.

There is a €500 cash prize for the winner of each category and the opportunity to read at the Cúirt/Over the Edge Showcase event next April at Cúirt 2018.

This year, poet Jane Clarke will judge poetry and one of the founders of Tramp Press, Lisa Coen will judge short stories.

The youth strand of the prize ‘Young Cúirt’ is for ages 12‐17. The winner will receive €100 cash prize and will read at the Cúirt Labs next April.

Submission Guidelines (all categories)
  • Poetry entries must consist of 3 poems under 50 lines each
  • short stories may be up to 2000 words. 
  • Entries in both English and Irish are welcome. 
  •  Writers submitting work should not have had a collection published in the category in which they enter. This does not include the publication of single poems, stories or chapbooks.
  • Submissions should be sent via email to info@cuirt.ie 
  • An entry fee of €10 is applicable for each separate entry. Payment can be made via the Paypal button.

Coast to Coast Magazine Submissions

Coast to Coast journal is designed and created by writer Maria Isakova Bennett, and edited by herself and poet Michael Brown. an A6 stitched journal, a piece of art work and a poetry publication. Each issue is produced as a limited edition, and will contain the work of twelve poets selected during submission periods. 
Maria has combined stitch and text to create a journal which is different to conventional poetry journals and magazines that you subscribe to, resulting in a publication which is a small piece of art in itself.

Afric McGlinchey was born in Galway, and raised in Zambia and Zimbabwe. She was awarded the 2010 Hennessy Emerging Poetry Award. Her début collection, The Lucky Star of Hidden Things was based on her peripatetic upbringing in Africa and Ireland, published by Salmon Poetry in 2012. She is currently working on her second volume
Brian Kirk is an award winning poet and short story writer from Clondlakin in Dublin. He was selected for the Poetry Ireland Introductions Series in 2013 and was shortlisted for the Patrick Kavanagh Award in 2014 and 2015. His poetry has been nominated for the Forward Prize and Pushcart Prize.
Maíréad Donnellan is member of Lit lab writers’ group. Her poetry has been published in various anthologies and magazines and she has been shortlisted in national poetry competitions including Cúirt new writing prize and Doire Press chapbook competition

Following the Readings, will be an ‘Open Mic’ session at which everybody is welcome. Please register with Kate on the night.

The 2018 dlr Arts Grants Scheme is now open. dlr Arts Office runs an annual grant scheme through which grants are available to provide financial assistance to individual artists, arts groups and arts organisations engaged in arts projects or events at local or county level and to support the professional development and arts practice of individual artists, arts groups and organisations.  There are also Arts Access Grants which are specifically for older persons groups and youth services.

Hanna Greally International Literary Awards 2017

The Hanna Greally International Literary Awards happen in conjunction with SiarScéal Festival, held in Roscommon every year since its inception in 2007. This year's 10th anniversary festival takes place over two days: Friday and Saturday, 20-21 October at Roscommon County Library in Roscommon Town, from 10am to 4.30pm on each day. The full programme of events has been announced and is posted online (also available to download in handy brochure format).

Winners in this year's Hanna Greally International Literary Awards will be announced and prizes presented as part of the formal proceedings that follow the Official Launch. The Overall Winner will take away the prize of seeing his or her book published professionally and formally launched at the following year's SiarScéal Festival (dates to be announced). The estimated value of this prize, which is sponsored by The Manuscript Publisher, is put at €2000. Full details of what the winning author will receive are outlined here.

In addition to the Overall Prize, there is also a First Prize – a cash prize of €700 – with trophy prizes for Highly Commended entries in the various categories of poetry, prose/short stories. The Ger Hanily Memorial Cup will be awarded to the best local entry received.

Day One of the festival, is entirely devoted to the Student Awards presentation, including a Student of the Year Trophy. This event is sponsored by Allied Irish Bank. The following day, Saturday 21 October, will see the presentation of awards in the other categories, including Overall and First Prize winners.

Mary Melvin Geoghegan, who is the adjudicator of this year's awards, will be the guest speaker. She herself is an award-winning poet. To date, four volumes of her poetry have been published, the most recent being, Say It Like a Paragraph (2012).

Entries may consist of poetry and/or prose compositions, previously unpublished, on the theme of Beneath Western Skies.

Cold Coffee Cup Spoken Word


Westport Arts Festival 2017 are running a spoken word segment, open for submissions and open to both emerging and established creators and performers.

Since its launch this past April, Cold Coffee Stand has showcased new work by poets and authors both Irish and international.

Guidelines


  • Submissions should run no more than 10 minutes of performance time per piece.  
  • Performers can submit up to three entries.
  • The Cold Coffee selection panel and guest judge Roberta Beary (Modern Haiku) will consider spoken word in any genre (poetry, prose, rap, theatre), provided it is the work of a single performer and does not exceed the time limit.
  • The first entry will cost €10, for two entries the cost is €15 and €20 for three. 
  • Closing date for submissions is Sunday September 10th.

A shortlist of five finalists will be announced on Thursday 14th September. The finalists must be available to perform their submitted work in Westport on Friday September 29 at the inaugural Cold Coffee Cup Spoken Word Night at the Gallery Wine Bar at 8pm.

AT The Edge, Cavan on Tuesday 29 August, 6.30pm in the Johnston Library. There will be an open mic following the readings. All welcome. Organised by Kate Ennals.

AT the Edge, Cavan, funded by Cavan Arts Office, curates three literary evenings a year. Three poets or writers are invited to come and read their work for fifteen minutes and the readings are followed by an Open Mic Session. Everyone is welcome to attend.

Lisa Frank writes stories. Lisa Frank was born and raised in Los Angeles but lived in the Pacific Northwest for several years before moving to Ireland in 2007. She won second place in the 2016 Francis MacManus Award and was a joint-winner of the 2015 Irish Writers’ Centre Novel Fair competition. She is also the editor of Galway Stories, featuring many of Ireland’s best fiction writers, including Kevin Barry, Mary Costello, Mike McCormack and Nuala Ní Chonchúir. Having taught creative writing in a variety of settings, including a mens’ prison, she now lives in Connemara with her partner and is co-director of Doire Press.


Maurice Devitt writes poems. He was runner-up in The Interpreter’s House Poetry Competition in 2017, and winner of the Trocaire/Poetry Ireland Competition in 2015. Maurice has been placed or shortlisted in the Patrick Kavanagh Award, Listowel Collection competition, Over the Edge New Writer Competition, Cuirt New Writing Award, Cork Literary Review  and the Doire Press International Chapbook Competition. He has had poems published in Ireland, England, Scotland, the US, Mexico, Romania, India and Australia, runs the Irish Centre for Poetry Studies site and is a founder member of the Hibernian Writers  Group.

Stephen James Smith is a Dublin poet and playwright central to the rise of the Irish spoken word scene.  His poetry videos have amassed over 1 million views online, including ‘My Ireland’, a short poetry film commissioned by St. Patrick’s Festival.  Stephen has performed extensively at top venues and events such as Electric Picnic, Other Voices, the National Concert Hall, the Abbey Theatre (Noble Call), Vicar Street (alongside Oscar winner Glen Hansard), the London Palladium, the Oscar Wilde Awards (LA), Glastonbury Festival and George Town Literary Festival (ML).  Arlen House publishes his debut collection, Fear Not, with a launch due in Autumn 2017.

The competition is open to anybody who has reached their 18th birthday by the closing date of the competition.
Up to three poems may be submitted per entry. You may submit as many entries as you wish. A fee of €5 per poem or 3 poems for €10 is payable.  


All shortlisted poems will be featured at a reading at Bailieborough Poetry Festival in October 2017, and authors will be invited to attend. If the author is unable to attend the short-listed poem will be read by a LitLab member. The winner will be announced at that reading and will be published on the website.

At around noon each Tuesday (GMT), from April to the end of January, five words are posted on the Ó Bhéal Five Words competition page. Entrants have one week to compose and submit poems that include all five words given for the week.

Iron Mountain Literature Festival - John McGahern Award


As part of the Iron Mountain Literature Festival, Leitrim County Council and the Tyrone Guthrie Centre have developed the John McGahern Award to encourage the development of emerging Irish writers and to pay tribute to the exceptional contribution of John McGahern to literature, and to Leitrim.

The recipient of the Award will receive a two-week fully resourced residency at the Tyrone Guthrie Centre and a stipend of €500. 

This is an open call to emerging writers of fiction resident in the Republic of Ireland. Applicants must have had some fiction or short stories published in a recognised journal or anthology selected by an established publisher or editor.

Deadline: 5pm, 31 July, 2017.

The recipient of the award will be publicly announced on Saturday 7th October 2017 during the Iron Mountain Literature Festival at The Dock, Carrick on Shannon.

Third Annual Metro Éireann Intercultural Writing Competition

Metro Éireann, in collaboration with Duke University’s Kenan Institute of Ethics, invites young writers living in Ireland to submit original works of writing to its third annual intercultural writing competition.
Writers between the ages of 14 and 21 – immigrants and non-immigrants – are encouraged to enter submissions that explore the ethical challenges associated with intercultural diversity in Ireland. There is no submission fee.
Prizes. €3200 will be awarded in three categories during a ceremony on August 4, 2017. There will be: 
- An ages 14-17 winner (€800) and runner-up (€400)
- An ages 18-21 winner (€800) and runner-up (€400)
- An ages 14-21 Spirit of Intercultural Ethics winner (€800)
Winning entries may also be published in Metro Éireann.

Deadline: July 30, 2017

All submissions must be previously unpublished. Submissions may take one of three forms: 
- A short story (2,000 words maximum)
- A novel extract (2,000 words maximum)
- A selection of poetry (5 poems maximum)
Submissions must be typed using 12-point Times New Roman font, double-spaced, and sent to info@metroeireann.com with the entrant’s full name and the word ‘Submissions’ in the subject line. Submissions should also include a cover page that provides the entrant’s personal information (name, age, address, telephone number) and details about their work (age category, title).
Judges will determine winners according to the following list of criteria:
- Engagement with themes of ethics and intercultural diversity
- Creativity and originality
- Organization and structure
- Impact on the reader
- Initiative of beginning writers

Terms and conditions:
  • The competition is open to people of 16 years and older.

  • The author’s name and details should only appear on the accompanying e-mail. Please ensure that the title is clearly marked at the top of the entry and each page thereafter. The author’s name must NOT appear on the entry submitted, only on the e-mail accompanying the piece.
  • Shortlisted writers will be invited to attend the award ceremony on Thursday October 5, 2017, however all expenses incurred will be the writer’s own.

Skylight 47 Issue 9 Submissions

The Galway based magazine goes from strength to strength. Call for submissions now for Issue 9.

Red Line Poetry Competition Rules

• The winners of this competition will receive the following prizes: 1st Place €300, 2nd Place €200 3rd Place €100
• A maximum number of 2 poems per person may be submitted.
• Poems should be in English and be a maximum of 40 lines (not including the title and spaces between stanzas).
• Each entered poem, including its title, should be typed single-spaced in a standard 12 point font on one side of a single A4 sheet. No fancy/coloured/oversized fonts or images please!
• All entrants must be 16 years of age or over.
• The competition is open to anyone living on the island of Ireland.
• Poems must be the original work of the entrant and must not have been published either in print or on a website, not be currently submitted or accepted for future publication. They must not previously have been awarded a prize in another competition.
Entrants must not have published a full collection of poems at the time of entry.
• Only hard copy entries will be accepted. Please retain a copy, as entries cannot be returned.

The Ogham Stone 2018

The Ogham Stone is a Journal of Literature and Arts produced by the MA Students of English & Creative Writing at University of Limerick.
The 2018 issue is now accepting submissions of unpublished work from both Irish and international writers and artists. They consider fiction, poetry,  creative non-fiction, and memoir, as well as visual arts/photography.

Deadline: 5pm on Thursday 31st August 2017.

SUBMISSION GUIDELINES

  • All submissions must be emailed to oghamstoneul@gmail.com. Submissions should be attached to your email.
  • All written work should be submitted as a Microsoft Word document (set in Times New Roman, 12 point). The file name should be your surname and initial(s) (e.g.  Smith J).
  • Please indicate in the subject line of the email what category your submission falls into (poetry, fiction, CNF etc).
  • Include a 150-word biography in the body of the email, along with a contact email address. 
  • Authors and artists are asked to submit pieces of work separately for each category (i.e. one email containing a poem, another for prose).
  • Individuals may submit up to 4 pieces in total but may submit across all categories.
  • Prose must not exceed 2,000 words in length.
  • Poetry should be submitted in the format in which you wish it to appear on the page; individual poems should not exceed 50 lines.
  • We cannot accept work that has been previously published (including on personal blogs) and prefer not to receive work currently being reviewed elsewhere

11 literature mentoring relationships

Words Ireland is offering 11 literature mentoring relationships in 2017, six of which are offered in partnership with the Arts Offices of Leitrim, Limerick, Kilkenny, Wexford, Wicklow, and the Arts Office and Libraries of Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown.
Words Ireland are seeking expressions of interest from experienced and established writer-mentors working in the areas of adult fiction, children’s/YA fiction and/or poetry to undertake the mentoring of writers of promise who are working in the same forms.
We are also are also seeking writers of adult fiction, YA fiction, children’s fiction and poetry to apply for mentoring support under our National Mentoring Programme.
There are a total of 11 mentee opportunities open to writers resident in any county in Ireland, north or south of the border.

Dermot Healy International Poetry Award

Once again the 2017 Dermot Healy International Poetry Award will be held in Manorhamilton during the Inaugural 'The Fierce Moon' in the Glens Centre which will celebrates the writings of Dermot Healy.

This years judge is Vona Groarke who will judge and present the €1000 first prize and trophy on the 15th September in Manorhamilton.

Deadline for submissions is 30th July.

Glebe House poetry competition

The third Glebe House poetry competition is now open for submissions.

Glebe House, for more than forty years, has been offering cross community rural retreats for young people in Kilclief County Down.
This year's judge for the competition is Emma Wright, founder of the Emma Press, one of the most energetic breakthrough publishing endeavours of recent years.
  
Poems submitted should be 40 lines or less. 
Entry fee is £10 for the first poem and £5 for each poem after that 
Prizes are 1. £200, 2. £100 and 3. £50.


The theme for this year's competition is Trust.

SiarScéal Festival 2017, which includes the Hanna Greally International Literary Awards ceremony, will take place over Friday and Saturday, 20-21 October at Roscommon County Library HQ from 10am to 4.30pm, including a break for lunch.

Presentations will be followed by readings and an open mike session, giving opportunities to participants who would like to showcase their work in a public setting. This will take place on the Saturday. There will a special presentation for winners in the student categories on Friday, 20 October.
